What's Happening in the Classroom

BACKGROUND ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CURRICULA

Before I jump into today's lesson, let me start with a background on the curricula my students are learning. My two upper-level students have been working thru a specific and tailored National Geographic curricula. So far, they have learned about [seeds] and [forest] fires]. These lessons have introduced many new topics and vocabulary words. I am so proud of them and how well they have retained the information about the different types of seeds, how they grow, and also the many ways seeds can travel.

**Below, is a /draw a line/ exercise to check comprehension check to see if the students remember the vocabulary from prior lessons.**

Next, the student learned about storms, lightning, and forest fires. In these lessons there are two important things we slowly build up for upper-level students: 1) Background Building and 2) Critical Thinking. These students did an excellent job understanding how the fires affect the different types of animals, how different animals react differently, and also how seeds play a part in the re-growth of plants in the forest.

In the end, a student is always asked if they think things such as lightning or forest fires are good or bad. This requires critical thinking skills and the use of the majority of the vocabulary taught in our lessons. Critical thinking questions allow the teacher to test how much of the unit material the student has retained.

**Below a student is discussing the different ways animals react during a forest fire. The student did an excellent job during class! Woohoo! **

I could not have been more proud of my students as we completed the final overall comprehension check for Unit 1! Way to go! 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

In the Classroom Today:

Today, students were introduced to [ super strawberries ]! They learned the anatomy of a strawberry plant, that its seeds are on the outside, and so much more! They were excited to name the many other things that [taste] [sweet]. When asked if they would want to grow strawberries at home, some students said "Yes, I would like to grow them at home." and others said "No!" All of the students learned what is needed to grow a strawberry plant at home, how they are grown on a strawberry farm, and that one can also get strawberries from the store! There was a lot of "sweet" conversation in class today!

isn't it amazing how many different topics all tie together? This is why having the right curriculum is important so that learning English is fun!
